Summer 2024 Update

Yeah, UK’s spring semester is over, but I’m continuing my work. Here are a few things coming…

  • Solo piano: At the end of the semester, I started an unpretentious piece in Rondo form for solo piano. I’m probably 15% in, will post an excerpt when I have enough to be of interest.
  • Video project: My last two symphonic pieces are very “visual” — they are programmatic (tell a story through music). I started to work on a video setting for the first, “September,” shortly after its completion. It got displaced by other purely musical projects. I’ve returned to that work, with a simpler agenda, and a few tools (Google Earth Studio, Adobe Premiere Pro, AI image generation) to help the workflow. My skills are not up to a proper rendering of the original idea (click here to read the project page for that work, which describes it), but the basic concept will be there. I have no work yet, still learning the tools.
  • String Quartet recording: I’ve been unsuccessful luring a local ensemble into recording my string quartet — the very first thing I wrote — so I’m in the process of negotiating with folks on fiverr.com to get that done. (If you’re unaware, fiverr.com is a platform for artists and skilled workers to sell their abilities to individuals looking for help in completing projects, or rendering ideas/works.) It is important that I have recordings with real instruments, since that was the goal of my writing in the first place. I’m willing to pay for the service!
  • Manuscript work: “The Coast” was my most ambitious project to date. I’m working to make printable versions of the conductor’s score and individual parts clean enough for distribution and performance. It might be that this will never find its way to a real orchestra, but my goals are always learning ones!
  • New choral work: This hasn’t been started, but I’ve been written into a grant application with a specific topic, so I intend to write a piece for inclusion in a concert next year.

…And, of course, my composition professor left me with an “assignment” for the summer. He’s attempting to get me to approach my composing from a different direction, and gave me some hints. I’m thinking it’s unlikely I’ll start on that before the fall semester, but who knows!
