The Voice Lesson: Live!

It’s up! Thanks to David Hume (Audio) and Brice Jones (video), and a little editing, the live performance of my choral piece by the Lexington Chamber Chorale is now available to watch!

The piece features soloists Virginia Berquist Bowles (Soprano — the “voice teacher”) and Scott Hiner (Tenor — the “voice student”) singing the words of Lexington vocal/choral legend Phyllis Jenness. Ginny knew Phyllis well (she passed in 2020), and was delighted to give voice to her words. (And Scott is just very good!) The full chorale is singing words written by George Ella Lyon, reactions to Phyllis’s instructions. The piece was written on commission, with the family and friends of Greg Drake providing funding. (There’s a short presentation at the end of the video where we present a signed score to Greg’s widow Beth.)

Dr. Gary Anderson, the Lexington Chamber Chorale’s Artistic Director, offered me the commission as a part of the Chorale’s 35th Anniversary season, to be performed at its October 12th opening concert. This will be Dr. Anderson’s last year with the chorale — I will miss his steady hand, and his support of my journey into choral composition.

And the journey continues! I’ll have two more performance opportunities in the coming months. Watch this space for more!
