Idea’legy — it’s up!

Today was the deadline for the completion of my latest composition, since it starts rehearsal in two weeks. And I made it! Whew!

Idea’legy is, as always, a pun, but with a serious background. These days it seems like “Ideas” as a concept is hardly the basis for most discussions, especially online ones. I thought an elegy for such was an appropriate idea for a composition. Of course, those of you who know me know that I can’t stay serious for long, so this composition leaves its slow and ponderous “elegy” opening for bouncier and more positive-sounding content about a third of the way through. I laugh at it all! Bah!

This composition, a bit short of eight minutes in length, features one of my favorite solo instruments, the cello, with an ensemble of two violins, viola, another cello, double bass, trombone, French horn, and trumpet. Besides the “program” above, I wrote it for this collection of instruments since they were available to this year’s UK New Music Ensemble. That’s important, since the piece will get a premiere with real instrumentalists April 21st! I’m beyond lucky that UK students are willing to preform my works!

In the meantime, you can watch my usual electronic export here. Reach more details about this work on its project portfolio page here.

Save the date! Tuesday, April 21, Singletary Center for the Arts Recital Hall, 7:30 PM.
