The Great Barrier Reef

Off the coast of northeastern Australia lies the largest coral reef system in the world, a natural setting so large that it’s visible from space, but built entirely by tiny coral polyps. Not surprisingly, this incredible natural wonder is under threat from a host of problems, most notably bleaching due to rising sea temperatures associated with climate change.

The Reef hosts an incredible range of sea life. This composition celebrates a few of its common (or odd) sea creatures, using an ensemble which includes flute, soprano sax/clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, piano, and two percussionists playing a variety of instruments. Linked above are pages with information about the musical form and content of this composition, as well as the specific sea creatures which inspired its various sections.
