I actually, originally intended this variation to be a part of the full thematic statement, but its use of a modified version of the theme (upside-down, slower) made it an actual variation. The French horn is given the main statement, with the fragment restated in rising keys until the entire ensemble takes over to push through a huge crescendo, and a brief transition to the next theme.
