On Thursday, March 21, In the Fine Arts building Room 107, The New Music Ensemble at the University of Kentucky will be performing several new compositions in an “open rehearsal” and informal concert. Included will be Gigue, one of the four dances from my Je danse, J’apprends. I get to hear this excerpt played by real instruments!
The New Music Ensemble is a class, led by composition professor Juan Trigos (my instructor). I’m especially thankful that Juan was able to recruit the string players for this premiere, since the class didn’t have enough players to cover. I’ve promised to help record the concert in the hopes that I’ll have something I can post on the website afterwards, but details on that have to be worked out.
The full concert will be from 6:45-8:30, with my part currently scheduled for about 8:00 PM. I will give a short talk about the composition — the entirety of Je danse, J’apprends, how Gigue fits into it, and a bit about Gigue — while the ensemble briefly rehearses the piece. Then it’ll be played in its entirety.
It’s an odd performance format, but one which gives a composer a forum to talk about their work.
Hope you can come!
