This movement begins with two full melodic statements, the 2nd with layered-in harmonics. The melody is then restated by the cello in a new key with fuller harmonic treatment, followed by harmonies over multiple melodic fragments with variations. Throughout, the 5/4 meter helps to eliminate rhythm as a thematic device, resulting in a stream of musical “consciousness.” Although the key changes are present and forceful, there isn’t (in contrast to the other movements) an underlying mathematical idea.
